Ron Schalla
Senior Geologist
Ronald Schalla has more than 38 years of expertise in hydrogeology, engineering geology, and geologic data collection and evaluation for construction and groundwater contaminant assessment.
During the last 30 years his major responsibilities have included: management of CERCLA and RCRA projects throughout the United States; development of innovative and cost-effective data collection/analysis methods and remediation technologies; and evaluations in support of hazardous waste management studies. He served as project leader and supported as an inventor and key contributor to the technology development and transfer to industry of several environmental technologies for characterization, sampling and remediation. Three of these new characterization and remediation technologies that were recognized by winning the 1995 R & D 100 Award (ERACE®), 1987 Federal Laboratory Consortium Special Award for Excellence in Technology Transfer (HydroStar®), and 1992 DOE-RL Manager’s Award for Exemplary Teamwork (TempHion®).
He has participated in the development and application of new characterization and monitoring procedures and guidelines for ASTM standards, and guidance documents for the EPA (CERCLA groundwater sampling and analysis) and U.S. Air Force (Environmental Contracting Strategies). He has authored or co-authored more than 80 scientific publications, environmental reports, presentations, and book chapters related to groundwater characterization and monitoring. He has been an instructor and organizer for several short courses pertaining to both environmental monitoring and remediation technology.
He also has extensive field and laboratory experience in water resource and geological engineering projects as well as RCRA and CERCLA projects for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD). In addition, he has prepared construction documents and specifications supervised installation of water wells, dams, reservoirs, facilities, and radiation detection systems for the DOE, Private Industry, Municipalities, DOD, and the Department of Homeland Security.
