The Short Story: Regulatory Support to Closure of the Hanford Site’s Radioactive Waste Storage Tanks
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Hanford Site is the largest waste cleanup effort in history. Freestone has played an instrumental role in formulating a strategy to develop and prepare closure plans for 149 highly radioactive, large waste storage tanks. Complete closure of the tank farms system is an undertaking likely to be managed by a future generation of site managers and regulatory personnel over a 30 year period!
We devised a closure planning document hierarchy and logic to simplify review by regulators and stakeholders, for the 30-year closure process. This strategy allows near-term, incremental progress in successfully closing portions of the single-shell tanks system, while building toward a long-term, comprehensive closure of the entire system. We provided extensive support for workshops with regulators, Department of Energy and site contractors, resulting in acceptance of a pathway to tank system closure and issuance of milestone supporting documents.
